Here’s a great way to start a lesson, to warm your student up for the lesson ahead. Choose a 9 letter word that your students should be familiar with (e.g. Christmas, vegetable, furniture, xylophone, Wednesday). You can either type the letters of the word, jumbled up, into Skype’s text conversation box (so for Christmas, you could type HITACRSMS), or even better, type the letters separately into an online whiteboard in a 3×3 grid. This allows the student to move the letters around to help them see new words. See the image below.
Ask your student to make as many words as they can from the letters of the word in, say, 3 minutes, and tell them that they can make a 9 letter word from the letters.
